KidLogger Parental Control for Linux
Using StaffCounter program for monitoring Linux-based computers
Recently, the Linux system has ceased to be exclusively a workhorse for programmers, and is gradually coming to the house to ordinary users. And here there is a problem - how to monitor the child's actions on Linux.
While there is no special KidLogger program for Linux, we can adapt the StaffCounter program for Linux to monitor the computer of a child running on Ubuntu and Linux Mint. Service StaffCounter.net was created by the development of the KidLogger service. And it used for monitoring productivity of the employees. But this does not prevent us from configuring the program for Linux to work with the KidLogger server.
How to do it:
- Download the Staffcounter program for Linux from: https://data.staffcounter.net/download.html
- Extract the package to a new folder. Before installing, we need to change the configuration file. In the files folder, edit the file staffcounter.conf: erase the comment (#) before the word url, and enter the address http://kidlogger.net/upload-v2/
Now instead of the server data.staffcounter.net the program will upload the data to the server KidLogger.net
- Install the program as follows: open the terminal program and go to the folder with the installation package.
- execute the command
To launch the program, another command is executed:
nohup staffcounter &
In the connection window, enter the e-mail address used for registration in KidLogger, and in the field Employee name - the name of the child and, if necessary, the type of device or the name of the computer. If you have two or more children working on different accounts, check "Autoregister for all users". When the other child enters the first time, the StaffCounter registration window will reappear.
After registration on the server the program will receive a unique identifier of the device and will work without the possibility of its stopping by the child. When the program window is activated from the tray, it will show the name of the active user and the device ID on the server.
Uninstalling the program
To uninstall the program, go to the installation folder in the terminal and run the command
The monitoring capabilities for Linux are still limited to recording the titles of open windows and the duration of work in them. Program also collects screenshots every 5 minutes. In the future, we plan to add a record of typed text on the keyboard and record correspondence in social networks and instant messengers.
